Resident Jim Minarik emphasized that the only similarity between The World and a cruise ship is that they both float on the water. While a cruise ship may have 1,500 passengers, The World accommodates between 200 and 300 residents. These residents own 167 private apartments on the ship, ranging from 290-square-foot studios to 3,240-square-foot four-bedroom residences. What sets The World apart is the sense of community and the leisurely and comfortable way of traveling that it offers to its residents.
Minarik shared that he originally planned to spend just one to two months a year on The World with his wife. However, they found themselves spending up to half of the year on board due to their love for the community and the way of travel it provides. So enamored by their experience, they even bought a second, larger apartment on the ship while keeping the first one for family and friends. Despite offering amenities like multiple restaurants and bars, yoga classes, a gym, two pools, a medical center, and round-the-clock room service, The World stands out due to the active involvement of its owners in decision-making.
Residential Director Eddie Wong highlighted that the residents of The World have a say in various aspects of the ship, including voting on the itinerary, refurbishments, and the board of directors. With itineraries changing yearly and including sought-after destinations like Antarctica, French Polynesia, and Easter Island, The World truly offers a unique travel experience. The ship docks in around 100 ports per year, allowing residents to spend two to five days in each location, rather than the typical few hours of a regular cruise.
While many residents live on the ship full time, most come and go as they please, taking breaks to explore other destinations. The community on The World is diverse, with residents from around 20 different nationalities, including a significant number of North Americans and Australians. According to Minarik, all owners have achieved some level of financial success, with the purchase prices for residences ranging from $2.4 million to $15 million. However, he emphasized that discussions on money are minimal on board, as residents focus more on their love for travel and shared experiences.
Potential buyers looking to own a residence on The World undergo a thorough vetting process, including financial and criminal background checks, as well as providing two letters of recommendation from existing residents. Approximately 10% of residences go up for sale each year, with an average ownership length of seven to eight years. Wong noted that by this time, owners have had the opportunity to explore the world several times over, creating a sense of fulfillment and adventure.
While life on The World offers a one-of-a-kind experience, there are challenges and drawbacks to consider. Minarik highlighted that spending time away from family, especially children and grandchildren, is a significant downside. Another limitation is the inability to bring pets on board. Despite these drawbacks, the unique community and travel experiences that The World provides outweigh the challenges, according to residents.
The World is regarded as the first and only ship of its kind, distinct from other residential ships that have faced delays or cancellations. For instance, the MV Narrative by Storylines, initially scheduled to set sail in 2024, has been delayed until 2027. Another residential ship called Life at Sea by Miray Cruises was canceled in November 2023, resulting in disappointment for travelers who had prepared for a three-year voyage.
