When most people think of Mallorca, they envision pristine beaches, sunny weather, and crystal-clear waters. The island’s mountains and rainfall are often overlooked. However, as I embarked on a tour bus journey through the Tramuntana mountain range towards the village of Valldemossa, I was pleasantly surprised by the heavy raindrops that began to fall. The cobblestone streets and charming stone houses of Valldemossa created a picturesque scene that captivated my senses.
Discovering Valldemossa’s History
Accompanied by a group of travel advisors, influencers, and journalists on an ALG Vacations-hosted trip, I was introduced to the historic village of Valldemossa. This hidden gem is renowned for its Carthusian monastery dating back to the 14th century, as well as its quaint stone houses and winding cobblestone streets. Notably, Valldemossa has been a favorite destination for celebrities throughout history. Composer Frederic Chopin and novelist George Sand spent a winter in the village in the 1830s, leaving a lasting impact on its cultural heritage. Additionally, actor Michael Douglas owns a home in the area and has frequented the town for relaxation.
Upon disembarking the bus, the rain subsided, enveloping Valldemossa in a light fog that added to its enchanting allure. Our tour guide encouraged us to meander through the narrow alleyways and lose ourselves in the ambiance of the village. As the rain resumed, I sought refuge in a charming bakery named Pasteleria Ca’n Molinas, where I indulged in a traditional potato pastry called coca de patata. The sweet, powdered sugar-coated roll provided the perfect energy boost before reuniting with the group and continuing our exploration.
As we descended from the mountains, we observed a line of vehicles heading towards Valldemossa, signaling the growing popularity of this once-hidden destination. Despite the increasing crowds, our early start and rainy weather allowed us to enjoy the village without the hustle and bustle of tourists. The hidden beauty of Valldemossa was gradually unveiling itself as visitors flocked to experience its charm.
