The Stunning Renovation of The British Colonial in Nassau

The British Colonial hotel in downtown Nassau reopened in January after a $50 million renovation. The hotel, originally built in 1901 by Henry Flagler, has a long and varied history. Over the years, it has been owned by different entities, including Hilton. Before the renovation, the hotel was mainly frequented by business travelers and conference attendees. However, the refurbishment aimed to attract more leisure guests by adding a second pool, updating the pool deck, and introducing new restaurant concepts. The hotel now boasts 288 rooms, including 25 signature suites, all with updated fixtures to provide guests with a comfortable stay.

The British Colonial now offers seven food and beverage options for its guests to enjoy. From the fine-dining Mahogany Club to the Sakana Noodle and Sushi Bar, there is a variety of culinary experiences to indulge in. During my visit, I had the pleasure of dining at the Mahogany Club, where I savored a delectable surf-and-turf dish followed by a meticulously crafted tiramisu. The ambiance at the Woodes Rogers Tavern Grill, with its dark wood tones and live jazz performances, transported me back to the 1920s, exuding a refined and speakeasy feel.

The British Colonial is not only steeped in history but also pays homage to Bahamian culture. A mural within the hotel showcases the island nation’s history, from Christopher Columbus’ landing in 1492 to its independence from Britain 51 years ago. The mural also highlights the hotel’s connection to the James Bond series, with scenes from movies like “Thunderball” and “Casino Royale” being filmed at the property. The hotel’s proximity to the Nassau Cruise Port and its lush grounds with oceanfront pools make it a prime location for guests to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Bahamas.

Situated on Bay Street, Nassau’s main thoroughfare, The British Colonial is just a short stroll away from popular attractions such as the Straw Market, Pirates of Nassau, and the Queen’s Staircase. Guests can also take advantage of the 18,000 square feet of meeting and event space, both indoors and outdoors, making it an ideal location for weddings, conferences, and other gatherings. Additionally, guests have access to amenities at nearby sister properties, enhancing their overall experience during their stay.

The renovation of The British Colonial in Nassau has transformed the hotel into a luxurious oasis that seamlessly blends history, culture, and modern amenities. Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach getaway or a venue for a special event, The British Colonial offers a truly unforgettable experience for all its guests.
