Venice has recently implemented a trial run of a tax on tourists who visit the city for only one day. This entry tax, which debuted on April 25 and will last until July 14, aims to address the issue of overtourism and discourage short day trips on peak days.
Day-trippers to Venice will be required to pay a five euro fee between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. in order to enter the city. Payment can only be made through a designated website that will generate a QR code for travelers to present in case of inspection. Municipal workers will conduct random checks at various points of entry to ensure compliance.
The city has designated gates at main access points where travelers can seek assistance if they have not paid the tax. Inspectors will be stationed at key locations such as the rail station, Piazzale Roma, and the Church of San Zaccaria. Additionally, there will be around 70 information booths scattered throughout Venice to provide guidance to visitors.
The tourist tax will be enforced on 29 specific dates from April to July, including holidays and weekends when day trips are more common. The city plans to collect data throughout 2024 on the effectiveness of the trial run and hopes to implement a permanent solution by 2025.
Certain groups are exempt from paying the tourist tax, including Venice residents, travelers staying overnight in the city, individuals with disabilities, and military personnel and first responders. These exemptions aim to ensure that those who contribute to the local economy and culture are not burdened by the tax.
