The journey to the vibrant Bosa Carnival in Sardinia began with a flight to Alghero airport, a small regional airport that provides the comforts of larger airports but with fewer terminals. After landing, we decided to rent a car from a local agency to embark on a scenic drive from Alghero to Bosa. The 45-minute drive along the road offered breathtaking views of the coastline, making it a dream for any road enthusiast. The mesmerizing views of the road and coastline made each moment truly unforgettable.
Upon reaching the small town of Bosa, we were greeted by a mix of colorful homes lining the streets. Each building boasted a different hue, creating a picturesque backdrop against the clear blue sky. The vibrant colors of the buildings painted a lively scene, almost like walking through a vibrant painting. It was fascinating to learn that the community laws mandated the colorful painting of houses, adding to the unique charm of Bosa.
Since the Bosa Carnival is a significant event in the town, accommodations tend to book up quickly. In order to secure a comfortable stay, it is advised to make reservations well in advance. During our visit, we opted to stay on a mahogany yacht known as a gulet, providing a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the carnival festivities. The gulet, offering private en suite cabins and a delightful breakfast, served as an ideal accommodation for us. Strolling along the Temo River, we found solace in its tranquil flow and scenic bridges that connected the two sides of Bosa. The peaceful surroundings provided a much-needed break from our everyday lives.
Bosa’s rich history came to life as we explored the town’s centuries-old traditions. Skilled artisans showcased their craft in leather workshops tucked away in narrow alleys, giving us a glimpse into the intricate process of creating leather goods. The aroma of tanned leather filled the air as we observed the craftsmen at work, meticulously crafting bags, belts, and other items. A visit to Bosa would not be complete without experiencing the town’s famous Malvasia wine. We indulged in a wine tasting event organized by a local winery, learning about the wine-making process and tasting the unique flavors of the Malvasia grapes. The sweet and aromatic notes of the wine left a lasting impression of Sardinia’s wine-making heritage.
In the afternoon, we embarked on a tour aboard a chartered gulet boat, allowing us to savor an aperitif while taking in the stunning coastal views of the neighboring Bosa islands. The gulet boat also doubled as our accommodation, offering a bed and breakfast experience that was both relaxing and convenient. As we approached downtown Bosa, we were greeted by the lively atmosphere of the carnival. The Temo River served as the focal point of the event, with residents and visitors alike engaging in paddle boarding, canoeing, and other festive activities. The streets and riverside were alive with music, dancing, and colorful costumes, showcasing the community’s wholehearted embrace of carnival traditions.
Our time at the vibrant Bosa Carnival in Sardinia was truly enchanting, filled with memorable experiences and warm hospitality.
