Breaking Barriers: The Rise of Chef Losa Yi

Chef Losa Yi’s journey in the culinary world began in her native Korea, where she discovered her love for cooking at a young age. Her passion led her to pursue formal culinary education in New York City at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park (CIA). This marked the beginning of her impressive career in the culinary industry.

After completing her education, Yi gained extensive experience working at renowned restaurants such as Gotham Bar & Grill, Daniel, and Aquavit. Her culinary adventures took her across the Atlantic to London, where she worked at the historic five-star hotel, The Savoy. However, it was her time working under Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas that truly shaped her culinary style and work ethic.

Following years of honing her skills in various culinary environments, Yi decided to return to Korea to reconnect with her roots. Immersing herself in the culture and cuisine of Seoul, she drew inspiration from her heritage to create a unique culinary identity. This experience paved the way for her to join Genesis House Restaurant as the executive chef in 2023.

At Genesis House, Chef Losa Yi showcases her passion for Korean cuisine by reinterpreting centuries-old dishes for the modern diner. One of the standout dishes on her spring menu is Yukhoe, a traditional Korean dish with influences from the Mongolians. Yi puts a contemporary spin on this classic dish by using premium Wagyu beef and incorporating a variety of fresh ingredients and flavors.

Chef Joel Robuchon’s mentorship played a significant role in shaping Yi’s culinary style and approach. His emphasis on focusing on the details and cooking with passion resonated with Yi and continues to influence her work at Genesis House. Yi’s menu at the restaurant spans a wide range of traditional Korean dishes, showcasing her dedication to highlighting the rich culinary heritage of her home country.

Reflecting on her journey, Chef Losa Yi acknowledges the importance of her family and heritage in shaping her culinary identity. The comforting dishes prepared by her grandmother and mother during her childhood serve as a source of inspiration for Yi as she continues to push boundaries and elevate Korean cuisine on the international stage. Through her unwavering commitment to showcasing the beauty and complexity of Korean culinary traditions, Yi is breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be a female Asian chef in the culinary world.
