Italy’s New “La Dolce Vita Orient Express” Train: A Luxury Experience Worth the Price?

The reservations for Italy’s new “La Dolce Vita Orient Express” train are set to open soon, and luxury train enthusiasts are advised to book their journey now before the rates climb any higher. The starting rates have already seen a significant increase, from 2,000 euros per person in December 2022 to 3,500 euros per person per night in November 2023. This marks a staggering 75% price hike within a 16-month period, making it crucial for individuals interested in this luxury experience to secure their bookings promptly.

While the exact reasons for the steep price increase were not explicitly stated by Accor, the French multinational hospitality company that operates the train, it is suggested that pricing evolves based on factors such as occupancy, season, route, and cabin type. Dave Goodger, managing director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Tourism Economics, mentioned that rising prices in luxury travel are driven by consumers’ willingness to pay higher rates for premium experiences. However, it is also attributed to rising costs, including increased staff expenses and debt service requirements.

Despite the significant price increase, the nightly rates for the “La Dolce Vita Orient Express” are still lower than another train that uses the “Orient Express” moniker in Europe, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, where the rates start from £7,060 British pounds ($8,925) per passenger. This highlights the unique offering of the La Dolce Vita train while positioning it as a more affordable luxury travel option in comparison to its counterparts.

Accor’s La Dolce Vita Orient Express is set to embark on nine different routes throughout Italy, offering travelers a chance to experience the country’s stunning landscapes and cultural heritage. The train’s itinerary includes a coastal journey from Palermo to Rome as well as a route from Rome to the Tuscan commune of Montalcino. The name “La Dolce Vita,” meaning “the sweet life,” pays tribute to Italian glamour portrayed in Federico Fellini’s iconic film from the 1960s. The train aims to capture the essence of luxury and sophistication that defined an era of opulence and elegance.

In addition to the La Dolce Vita Orient Express, Accor has unveiled plans to launch another train named “The Orient Express,” utilizing restored 19th-century carriages that were once part of the historic “Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express.” This train will operate various routes across Europe, including the renowned Paris-Istanbul journey, providing travelers with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history and allure of train travel. Originally slated to launch this year, the services are now scheduled to commence in 2026, expanding the luxury train offerings under the Orient Express brand further.

While the price increase for Italy’s La Dolce Vita Orient Express may seem steep, it is reflective of the premium experience and exceptional service that travelers can expect onboard. With its unique routes, luxurious accommodations, and homage to Italy’s cultural heritage, the train promises an unforgettable journey through the picturesque landscapes of the country. As luxury travel continues to evolve and cater to discerning passengers seeking exclusive experiences, the La Dolce Vita Orient Express stands out as a luxurious and captivating option for those looking to indulge in the finer things in life.
