Leadership Change at HX Cruise Line: Gebhard Rainer Appointed as CEO

HX, the cruise line formerly known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, has made a significant leadership change by appointing Gebhard Rainer as its new CEO. Rainer, who currently holds the CEO position at Sandals Resorts International, will be transitioning to his new role at HX after completing his responsibilities at Sandals by June 30.

As HX moves towards establishing itself as a stand-alone brand separate from Hurtigruten, a specialist in Norwegian coastal cruises, Rainer’s appointment comes at a crucial time. The expedition cruise line is in the process of building an independent management team to oversee its operations and growth moving forward.

Rainer’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by HX, emphasizing the importance of his leadership experience and market knowledge. With a successful track record at Sandals, a company deeply connected to the travel industry, Rainer is expected to bring valuable insights and expertise to propel HX towards fulfilling its full potential.

Daniel Skjeldam, who previously served as CEO for both Hurtigruten Group and HX during the initial phases of the expedition line’s transition, will be stepping down as CEO to focus on his role as a board member of Hurtigruten Group starting July 15. This restructuring signifies the final stage of the separation between Hurtigruten and HX, paving the way for dedicated leadership within each entity.

“With the split between Hurtigruten and HX nearing completion, the timing is perfect to bring in a dedicated CEO for HX to drive the company forward,” Skjeldam commented on the transition. Rainer’s appointment as the new CEO aligns with HX’s strategic plan to position itself for sustained growth and success in the expedition cruise market.

Rainer’s tenure at Sandals since 2018 and his previous role as Hyatt’s CFO highlight his extensive experience in the hospitality and travel industry. His understanding of the U.S. market, coupled with his proven leadership capabilities, make him a valuable addition to HX as it charts a new course as an independent brand in the cruise industry.
