Thanksgiving Travel Surge: Record Numbers Expected on the Move

Thanksgiving has traditionally been one of the busiest travel periods in the United States, and 2023 is set to be no exception. The American Automobile Association (AAA) has projected that this year, a staggering 79.9 million individuals will embark on journeys of 50 miles or more from their homes. This surge represents an increase of 1.7 million travelers compared to the previous year, illustrating a growing trend of holiday travel. Interestingly, AAA has expanded its travel period this year to encompass the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and the Monday following it, likely influencing these record numbers.

The majority of Thanksgiving travelers will be hitting the roads, with an estimated 71.7 million people choosing to drive. This figure marks an increase of 1.3 million from the last year’s figures. For those concerned about fuel prices, there is some good news on the horizon; the average cost per gallon of gas is expected to fall below $3 this year, a significant drop from last year’s average of $3.26. This decrease may encourage even more Americans to opt for road travel, reaffirming the convenience and flexibility driving offers during the busy holiday season.

Air travel during Thanksgiving is also on the rise, with 5.84 million individuals projected to fly, up from 5.73 million in 2022. However, travelers should be prepared to spend a little more; domestic flight prices are expected to rise by an average of 3%. While the flight numbers within the U.S. show a steady trend, international travel has seen exciting growth, with bookings soaring by 23%. Interestingly, the cost for international flights has decreased by 5%, potentially making overseas adventures more appealing for holiday travelers.

Not to be overlooked, an estimated 1.92 million people will travel via train, bus, or cruise, indicating a 9% rise in this mode of travel. The cruise industry, in particular, has seen a remarkable 20% increase in bookings, highlighting a shift in how families choose to celebrate the holidays together. This trend showcases the growing popularity of cruise vacations as a unique and experiential way to create lasting memories with loved ones.

Top Destinations for Thanksgiving Travel

When it comes to popular destinations, Florida remains a clear favorite for domestic travelers. Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale top the charts, with Tampa coming in fifth. The allure of sun-soaked beaches and vibrant attractions continues to draw families in. For those looking to venture further abroad, Budapest leads as AAA’s most sought-after international destination, joined by other enticing locales such as Cancun and Rome.

Thanksgiving serves as a pivotal time for Americans to reconnect with family and friends, and travel plays a significant role in these gatherings. As noted by AAA Travel vice president Stacey Barber, this Thanksgiving season is not just about the numbers; it’s about the connections and experiences that travel brings to families across the country. This year is poised to set new records in all forms of travel, reinforcing the importance of this cherished holiday in American culture.
