The Evolution of Fast Casual Menus: Focus on Beverages

In 2020, restaurants had to make significant changes to their offerings due to the global pandemic. However, in recent times, there has been a noticeable trend of expanding menus once again, and fast-casual chains are following suit. Burger King, Popeye’s, and Pizza Hut are some of the big names that have introduced new items to their menus. But it’s not just food items that are getting a revamp in 2024. According to The Wall Street Journal, fast-casual chains are now focusing on beverages as a way to differentiate themselves from the competition.

Texas-based chain Whataburger has joined the trend by launching an all-new coffee line-up. The chain, known for its iconic five-inch burgers and orange and white striped restaurants, has introduced a range of new coffee options to cater to evolving consumer tastes. Whataburger has long served hot coffee, but their new line-up includes an iced coffee blend for the first time.

Whataburger’s new coffee is made from a premium blend of 100% Arabica beans sourced from Colombia, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The iced coffee blend features bold aromas of dark-roasted coffee with nutty, smoky, and toasted flavor notes. On the other hand, the hot coffee options, both regular and decaf, have a classic medium roast aroma with citrus and brown sugar flavor notes.

In today’s fast-paced world, customers are not just looking for options but demanding customization. Whataburger has responded to this demand by offering four flavor options for their iced coffee: Sweet Cream, Vanilla, Caramel, and Mocha. This aligns with their motto of “just like you like it.” Additionally, the introduction of limited-time offers, such as specialty shakes like Dr. Pepper and Banana Pudding, has garnered a positive response from customers.

By expanding their beverage menu and introducing new coffee offerings, Whataburger is positioning itself to compete with coffee chains. The availability of coffee options all day, every day, bridges the gap for customers looking for a late-night caffeine fix. The latest addition, the Caramel Latte Shake, extends their coffee program into the dessert realm, providing customers with a sweet treat with a hint of caffeine.

Whether permanent or limited-time, Whataburger’s menu additions reflect a larger strategy by the brand to create a more robust beverage program. By keeping up with consumer trends and offering quality ingredients and flavor options, Whataburger is aiming to establish itself as a key player in the fast-casual beverage market. With a focus on customization, limited-time offers, and innovative flavors, Whataburger continues to evolve its menu to cater to the changing preferences of its customers.
