Maui has recently made a significant move towards controlling vacation rentals, with the Maui Planning Commission voting unanimously for a proposal that could potentially eliminate over 7,000 short-term rentals across the island. If the Maui County Council approves the measure, it will come into effect on July 1, 2025, for short-term rentals in West Maui, and on Jan. 1, 2026, for all other apartment districts. Out of the 13,600 short-term rentals on Maui, approximately 45% are located within the apartment districts specified in the legislation. The proposal, put forward by Maui Mayor Richard Bissen, seeks to transition more short-term rentals into long-term housing options, in an effort to combat a persistent housing crisis on the island, which was amplified by the devastating Lahaina wildfires last year.
