The Pinnacle Guide: Recognizing Excellence in Bars Around the World

The recently launched Pinnacle Guide is aiming to revolutionize the way bars are recognized for their excellence. Unlike traditional systems like Michelin stars, the Pinnacle Guide awards bars with “pins” as a measure of their quality. The debut list of 37 bars across seven markets has just been released, with 12 bars receiving two pins and 25 bars receiving one pin. Interestingly, no bar on this first list received the highest mark of three pins.

The Pinnacle Guide was founded by industry veterans Hannah Sharman-Cox, Siobhan Payne, and Dan Dove. The founders believed that the bar industry needed an additional recognition system that was transparent and inclusive. They spent 18 months consulting with industry experts to develop a comprehensive evaluation process. Unlike other guides, the Pinnacle Guide’s evaluation rubric is clear and detailed. Bars know exactly what criteria they are being judged on, including not just the quality of drinks and service, but also factors like hiring policies, staff training, and environmental consideration.

The Pinnacle Guide aims to recognize bars from a wide variety of concepts and locations. The guide does not limit itself to high-end hotel bars or scientific mixology spots. Instead, bars are evaluated against their own stated concepts, allowing beach bars, sports bars, and neighborhood dives to be considered as long as they adhere to the criteria. The goal is to shine a spotlight on bars that may have been overlooked in the past and to inspire all bars to improve themselves.

One unique aspect of the Pinnacle Guide is the feedback provided to each bar after evaluation, even if they do not receive a pin. This constructive feedback is meant to help bars identify areas for improvement and work on potential blind spots. Bars are encouraged to reapply with these suggestions in mind. The ultimate aim of the guide is to elevate the industry as a whole and encourage continuous improvement.

While the initial list primarily focuses on bars in the U.K. due to the founders’ home base and strong interest from local bars, the Pinnacle Guide plans to expand its geographical reach in the future. The guide currently evaluates bars in seven markets, including the U.K., U.S., Australia, Dubai, Mexico, Singapore, and Spain. As the brand grows, new markets and reviewers will be added to provide a more global perspective.

The Pinnacle Guide represents a new and transparent approach to recognizing excellence in the bar industry. By providing detailed evaluation criteria, offering constructive feedback to all bars, and celebrating a diverse range of establishments, the Pinnacle Guide is shaping the future of bar recognition. With its focus on continuous improvement and inclusivity, the Pinnacle Guide is poised to become a respected authority in the world of bars and cocktails.
