The Revitalization of Kauai’s Historic Coco Palms Resort

Kauai’s Coco Palms Resort, a historic property that has been closed since 1992 due to damage from Hurricane Iniki, is finally undergoing redevelopment. The newly appointed owner, Reef Capital Partners, has initiated a $400 million project to bring the resort back to life. The plan includes demolishing old structures, constructing new buildings, and restoring the site to its former glory. The anticipated reopening date for the modernized version of the resort is set for 2026.

Commitment to Preservation

Reef Capital Partners has expressed a strong commitment to preserving the historical significance of the Coco Palms Resort. By taking down deteriorating structures that have been neglected for decades, the developer aims to demonstrate its dedication to being responsible stewards of this iconic landmark. CFO Jon Day emphasized the importance of fulfilling the promise to restore the property and revitalize its cultural heritage.

As part of the redevelopment project, Reef Capital Partners is actively engaging in archeological and cultural monitoring. Moreover, the developer has enlisted the expertise of a cultural advisory committee composed of local Native Hawaiians. This committee will play a crucial role in guiding the restoration process and ensuring that the site’s cultural integrity is preserved throughout the revitalization efforts.

The transformed Coco Palms Resort will feature several enhancements, including a reduction in guestrooms from 400 to 350. Additionally, the property will house a cultural center, spa, and taro farm, offering guests a unique and immersive experience. Originally opened in 1953, the resort gained fame as the backdrop for the 1961 film “Blue Hawaii” starring Elvis Presley.

The redevelopment of Kauai’s Coco Palms Resort represents a significant undertaking aimed at restoring a beloved landmark to its former grandeur. With a focus on preservation, cultural sensitivity, and modern amenities, the revitalized resort is poised to attract visitors from around the world while honoring its rich history and heritage.
