Surprisingly, only one of these top scorers belonged to the unflavored variety, with the honor going to Initiale Vodka from Maison Solignac in Cognac, France.
Initiale Vodka stands out for its unique production process and rich flavors. While Cognac is famous for its grapes, Maison Solignac opted to craft their vodka from rye grain instead. The use of an “ultra slow distillation” method in small copper pot stills results in a spirit with savory elements and baking spices. The official tasting notes from IWSC highlighted “biscuity sweetness, honeyed warmth, and fragrant meadow notes, balanced with subtle fennel and caramel nuances.”
The brand takes its name from founder Pierre Solignac, who learned about traditional vodka production techniques while living in Russia in the 1990s. Drawing on 18th-century methods, Initiale Vodka stands in contrast to the mass-produced neutral grain spirits common today. This velvety, 80-proof sipper is meant to be enjoyed chilled but never frozen, offering a complex flavor profile perfect for pairing with high-grade sashimis, cured fish, or classic caviar.
Unfortunately, Initiale Vodka is currently unavailable on US shelves, but its global recognition from IWSC may lead to increased distribution. European consumers can purchase a bottle for around 55 euros. Another standout from this year’s competition is the Mango Vodka from Desi Daru, scoring a 99 as well. Judges praised the fruit-flavored expression for its “beautifully fresh aromas of real mango” and smooth, vibrant palate.
