Portland International Airport in Oregon has recently unveiled the first phase of its new main terminal, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s $2.15 billion transformation project. This new terminal boasts state-of-the-art check-in areas, wider TSA security screening zones equipped with the latest technology, and expansive public spaces that offer travelers a unique experience.
The design of the new terminal pays homage to the Pacific Northwest environment, incorporating locally sourced materials and elements inspired by the region’s natural beauty. One of the standout features of the terminal is its timber roof, sourced from local and regional wood producers, which is adorned with 49 skylights. These skylights allow natural light to filter through, illuminating the airport’s 5,000-plus living plants, including full-sized trees.
Sharron van der Meulen, managing partner of the architectural firm ZGF, emphasized that the terminal was meticulously designed to minimize the stress associated with travel. Travelers are welcomed with expansive views of the airfield, abundant natural light, and lush interior landscapes that evoke the serene ambiance of a Pacific Northwest forest. The goal is to create a sense of wonder and delight for passengers as they navigate through the terminal.
While the first phase of the terminal project has been completed, there are still upcoming enhancements in the pipeline. The final phase of the project is scheduled for an early 2026 opening, which will introduce 10 additional restaurants and shops, new airline lounges, waiting areas for arriving passengers, and upgraded escalators, elevators, and restrooms. These additions will further enhance the overall travel experience for passengers passing through Portland International Airport.
In addition to the terminal renovation, Portland Airport has also made strides in expanding its facilities. Since 2020, the airport has expanded Concourse E, introduced a new Concourse B, and inaugurated a rental car center. These developments underscore the airport’s commitment to modernization and meeting the evolving needs of travelers.
